In Malaysia, most electronic and electrical products are regulated. Wireless products fall under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC, also known as SKMM), while general electrical appliances are certified by the Energy Commission (ST). In practice, certification is often carried out by SIRIM QAS, so people commonly refer to the certification of electronic and electrical products in Malaysia as SIRIM certification.
Malaysia uses a voltage of 240V, 50Hz. Common power plugs and sockets include the British plug (BS) and the European plug, but general electrical products must be equipped with Type G British plugs (13A) or 15A Malaysian plugs.
For electronic and electrical products, the application and certificate can be obtained by domestic trading companies or manufacturers. In addition to general household appliances, critical components such as plugs, power cords, switches, LED power supplies, etc., also need to obtain SIRIM certification.
For most electronic products, SIRIM certification accepts IEC CB reports to waive testing.
Meanwhile, importers must apply for an ST COA certificate from the Energy Commission (ST). The ST COA certificate is also a requirement for applying for SIRIM certification.
For some electronic products, an energy efficiency report is required when applying for the ST COA. Products requiring energy efficiency testing include: refrigerators, household air conditioners, televisions, household electric fans, fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps, LED bulbs, and incandescent lamps.
- SIRIM Product Certification (PC license): The certificate is valid for five years but requires annual factory audits to maintain its validity.
- Batch Certification: This requires SIRIM to inspect the goods at the port, sample the products, and test them. Only after passing the tests can the products be released.
