Products exported to the United States that contain button cell batteries, such as quartz watches, locators, music boxes, etc., are required to have a UL 4200a warning label. This is to prevent button batteries from falling out and being swallowed by children, which could pose a life-threatening risk. Below are the requirements for the UL 4200A warning label. The product label must include the following warning message.
- If there is insufficient space on the product, the following symbol can be used to replace the warning message. However, this symbol must be explained in the user manual or other materials.
The symbol must be:
- At least 7 mm in width and 9 mm in height.
7C.3 If the product is too small to fit the above symbol, then the outer packaging/label/hangtag must include the following warning message (as required by Section 7B).
The outer packaging must have a warning message (whether or not the product label includes one):
1) If there is enough space on the packaging:
- Use Figure 7B.1 or Figure 7B.2 (WARNING must be at least 5mm high, with the remaining text at 2.5mm).
- The symbol must be at least 7 mm in width and 9 mm in height.
- The symbol must be at least 8 mm (0.31 in) in diameter.
2) If there is not enough space:
- The label can be split into Figure 7B.3 and Figure 7B.4 to mark separately.
- The symbol must be at least 7 mm in width and 9 mm in height.
3) Packaging must also indicate the following:
- Battery type (e.g., LR44, CR2032);
- Nominal voltage.
If there is a user manual, it must include the following:
- The contents of 7B.1 or 7B.2.
- All the content from Chapter 9 (if there is no user manual, this information can be included on the outer packaging/hangtag/label).
a) The statement:
_“Remove and immediately recycle or dispose of used batteries according to local regulations and keep away from children. Do NOT dispose of batteries in household trash or incinerate.”_
b) The statement:
_“Even used batteries may cause severe injury or death.”_
c) The statement:
_“Call a local poison control center for treatment information.”_
d) A statement indicating the compatible battery type (e.g., LR44, CR2032).
e) A statement indicating the nominal battery voltage.
f) The statement:
_“Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged.”_
g) The statement:
_“Do not force discharge, recharge, disassemble, heat above (manufacturer's specified temperature rating), or incinerate. Doing so may result in injury due to venting, leakage, or explosion resulting in chemical burns.”_
a) The statement:
_“Ensure the batteries are installed correctly according to polarity (+ and -).”_
b) The statement:
_“Do not mix old and new batteries, different brands, or types of batteries, such as alkaline, carbon-zinc, or rechargeable batteries.”_
c) The statement:
_“Remove and immediately recycle or dispose of batteries from equipment not used for an extended period of time according to local regulations.”_
d) The statement:
_“Always completely secure the battery compartment. If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product, remove the batteries, and keep them away from children.”_
