EN 71 is the regulatory standard for toy products in the European Union market. Many countries have established their own safety regulations for these products, and manufacturers must ensure their products meet the relevant standards before they can be sold in the region. Manufacturers are responsible for accidents caused by production defects, poor design, or the use of inappropriate materials. This led to the introduction of the EN 71 certification decree in Europe, which aims to reduce or avoid injuries to children by setting technical specifications for toys entering the European market according to the EN 71 standard.
The toy directive applies to any product or material designed for or intended for children under 14 years of age.

Additionally, for electric toys, including battery-powered toys and toys with AC/DC converters, electromagnetic compatibility tests are required along with the standard EN 71 tests. These tests include EMI (electromagnetic interference) and EMS (electromagnetic susceptibility).
