On June 3, 2020, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) released EN 14350:2020 "Childcare Articles - Drinking Equipment - Safety Requirements and Test Methods." This standard specifies the safety requirements for materials, structure, performance, packaging, and product information for drinking equipment intended for children aged 0 to 48 months.
Drinking utensils suitable for children from 0 to 48 months of age:
1. Reusable containers and reusable drinking accessories;
2. Disposable containers and bundled drinking accessories;
3. Disposable teats;
4. Ready-to-use teats.
1. Product images showing the manufacturer's or importer’s name and traceability mark (batch code or manufacture date or lot number);
2. A declaration complying with Regulation 10/2011, including a) manufacturer or importer details b) product description c) relevant substance information + migration levels d) food types, time and temperature, and contact surface area;
3. EN 14350:2020 test report or certificate (Childcare articles. Drinking utensils. Safety requirements and test methods).
1. The revised EN 14350:2020 (Childcare Articles - Drinking Utensils) combines the two separate parts of the old EN 14350 standard (EN 14350-1:2004, EN 14350-2:2004) and has reformatted the entire standard.
2. The new standard includes several important revisions:
- "Terms and Definitions" - Revision of existing terms and addition of new entries;
- "Description" - New parts include push-pull valves, protective caps, handles, clips, rings, etc., expanding the illustrations of different drinking utensils and their design features;
- "Test Equipment and Tolerances" - A new section describing the test equipment used;
- "Structure and Mechanical Performance - General and Sample Preparation" - Revised sample preparation and pretreatment;
- "Structure and Mechanical Requirements and Testing" - Expanded and reorganized to improve test sequences. New requirements for decorations, inscriptions, and decals introduced, and test methods modified;
- "Chemical Requirements and Test Methods" - Expanded and reorganized to clarify compliance with food contact-related regulations, but substances covered by other harmonized regulations are not directly included, such as: Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex XVII Items 51 and 52 for phthalates; Regulation (EU) 10/2011 "Food Contact Plastics" for food contact substances (e.g., Bisphenol A (BPA));
- Annex A "Warnings" - A new normative annex with warning translations in 24 languages;
- Annex B "Basic Principles" - A new informative annex explaining some of the requirements of the standard;
- Annex C "Method for the Determination of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and Antioxidants Specified in Table 7" - Revised and more detailed informative annex;
- Annex E "Good Practice for Visibility and Legibility" - A new informative annex on warnings, product and purchase information, and user instructions.
3. Summarizes the migration limits for elements in drinking utensils as defined by EN 14350:2020 and EN 14350-2:2004. The new standard restricts migration limits for 19 soluble elements (including two types of chromium), while the old standard restricted only eight.
