IC is the abbreviation for Industry Canada, the former name of Canada's Department of Industry. It mandates that wireless products sold in Canada must obtain ic certification. Therefore, IC certification serves as a passport and essential requirement for wireless electronic and electrical products to enter the Canadian market.
Products covered by IC certification include broadcasting and television equipment, information technology devices, radio equipment, telecommunications devices, and more. The process and testing requirements are similar to those of the FCC, and joint applications with the FCC are generally possible. Since 2016, IC has been officially renamed to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
The ICES-003 standard requires the labeling “CANICES-3() / NMB-3()” on the product, where denotes the product category (e.g., CANICES-3(B)/NMB-3(B)).
Under the wireless regulation RSP-100, ised certification label requirements involve the following concepts:
- Product Marketing Name (PMN)
- Hardware Version Identification Number (HVIN)
- Firmware Version Identification Number (FVIN)
- Host Marketing Name (HMN)
The HVIN and the ISED Certification Number must be durably marked on the product exterior (or electronically displayed in accordance with e-labeling requirements). The ISED Certification Number must be prefixed with "IC:" and follow the format:
IC:XXXXX-YYYYYYYYY, where XXXXX is assigned by ISED, and YYYYYYYYY is a unique alphanumeric string determined by the manufacturer.
The PMN must be displayed electronically (e-label), or marked externally on the product, product packaging, or product datasheet, and made available with the product or online.
If the product is very small, the label can be placed in a prominent position in the instruction manual. The user manual may be in electronic format.
Notices must also be reflected on the product or in the manual. Brands must follow these rules when designing the notice:
- It must be placed prominently on the product or in the manual;
- It must indicate the testing standard of the product;
- If there are multiple versions of the product, each version must be reflected;
- The notice must be in both English and French. If the applicant only provides the notice in English during certification, a written statement must be submitted, declaring that both English and French versions will be available when the product is sold.
