IEC62680 Testing and Certification (Common Charger Directive) is an international standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a non-profit, non-governmental organization that develops and publishes international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. The IEC launched its certification system in the 1930s, setting electrical, performance, and safety requirements for common electronic products.
The scope of IEC standards covers electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, energy efficiency, and renewable energy technologies. Today, IEC certification is widely recognized and accepted by manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and consumers worldwide. It has become a crucial reference for government agencies in various countries to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical and electronic imports.
The EU's Common Charger Directive amendment proposal, officially published in December 2022, includes Directive (EU) 2022/2380, which supplements the specific implementation requirements of Directive 2014/53/EU (RED) regarding common charging interfaces. On June 27, 2023, the EU approved the adoption of the 2022 versions of IEC 62680-1-2 and IEC 62680-1-3 standards. According to the Radio Equipment Directive, by December 2024, mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, handheld game consoles, e-readers, in-ear headphones, keyboards, mice, and portable navigation systems must comply with this directive. By April 2026, laptops must also have USB Type-C ports to meet the directive's requirements.
1. EN IEC 62680-1-2: USB Power Delivery Specification (PD protocol)
- Devices supporting fast charging (greater than 5V or 3A or 15W) must comply.
2. EN IEC 62680-1-3: USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification
- Relevant devices must use Type-C charging interfaces, and Type-C connectors and cables must comply with this specification.
3. User Choice to Purchase Devices Without Bundled Chargers
- Manufacturers or sellers must indicate on the packaging whether the product includes a charger, specify the required power range of the charger, and state the supported fast-charging protocol.
- International Recognition: IEC standards are widely recognized in many countries, facilitating the smooth market entry and sale of products in more regions.
- Enhanced Product Safety: IEC certification ensures that products/systems are safer, protecting consumers from potential hazards.
- Guaranteed Interoperability: Ensures seamless compatibility between products and systems of different brands, reducing the risk of errors or malfunctions.
- Improved Quality: Ensures products meet standard specifications, ensuring reliability.
