A RoHS Compliance Certificate is a document that certifies a product's compliance with the RoHS Directive, which restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

RoHS stands for "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" and refers to an EU directive aimed at limiting the use of specific harmful materials in electrical and electronic equipment. The RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) was first introduced in February 2003 and has since undergone multiple revisions to update the list of targeted substances and broaden its scope.
- Lead (Pb): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Mercury (Hg): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Cadmium (Cd): Limit of 100 mg/kg or 0.01%
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): Limit of 1000 mg/kg or 0.1%
The latest standard, known as RoHS 2.0, is defined by the Directive 2011/65/EU, which replaced the earlier RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC on July 21, 2011. This updated directive expanded the scope to include 10 restricted substances instead of the original 6.
In May 2022, the EU initiated a proposal process to add two more substances—Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs) and TetrabromoBISphenol A (TBBP-A)—to the restricted list. Companies affected by this directive should monitor developments closely to ensure compliance.
The RoHS directive applies to a wide range of products, including:
- Large household appliances
- Small household appliances
- Information technology and telecommunications equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Toys, leisure, and sports equipment
- Medical devices
- Monitoring and control instruments
- Automatic dispensers
- Other electrical and electronic equipment not covered by the above categories
- Standard Testing Cycle: 5 business days.
- Testing Methods: For the U.S., EU, and other global markets, the testing is conducted according to the IEC 62321 series of standards. For China RoHS Compliance, the GB/T 26125 testing method is used.
