In international trade, the motor industry encounters technical standards and regulations mainly related to energy efficiency and safety. In the United States, although the law does not mandate that products must bear safety certification marks, it is difficult to find a market without them. Small and medium motors exported to the United States require safety and energy efficiency certifications.
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is the most authoritative and independent third-party certification organization in the United States, and one of the most recognized globally. UL mainly conducts product safety certification and operational safety verification, establishing and publishing relevant standards. UL can certify motors, electrical appliances, power tools, insulation materials, and cables. UL-certified products can be marketed throughout North America. Suppliers need to purchase insurance to sell products, and UL certification is required for insurance.
Applicants must submit a written application to UL for product testing. This includes company information (name, address, contact person, postal code, phone, and fax) and product information (name, model, intended use, parts list, electrical performance, structural diagram, product photos, user manual, and safety or installation instructions). The more detailed the application form, the more accurately UL can plan the testing procedure and project evaluation.
- Applicant Company: The company applying for product testing and responsible for all engineering service fees.
- Listed Company: The company listed in the UL certificate and product catalog.
- Manufacturing Plant: The producer of the product.
2. Decision Based on Provided Product Information
Once the product information is complete, UL engineers will determine the applicable UL standards, testing fees, duration, sample quantity, and notify the applicant in writing. The formal application form and tracking service agreement will be sent to the applicant company.
The applicant signs the application form and tracking service agreement and returns them to UL, makes the payment via bank transfer, and sends samples with appropriate descriptions (e.g., name, model).
Upon receiving the signed application form, payment, and samples, UL will notify the applicant of the test schedule. UL can also accept third-party test data.
If the product meets UL standards, UL will issue a compliance report and tracking service details, describing the test results, sample indicators, product structure, and applicable safety marks. The tracking service details include product descriptions and guidelines for UL inspectors.
UL inspectors in China will conduct the initial production inspection (IPI) at the manufacturing plant, checking the product and its parts in production and storage to ensure consistency with the tracking service details. If the details require, inspectors will also perform witnessed tests. Upon successful inspection, the applicant is authorized to use the UL mark. Subsequent inspections will occur periodically, based on product type and production volume, to ensure ongoing compliance with UL requirements. Any product changes should be reported to UL, and major changes may require resubmission of samples for necessary testing.
- Incorporate safety features into the product design from the beginning, ensuring compliance with applicable UL standards.
- Use UL-certified components and materials to increase the likelihood of passing UL tests.
- Conduct self-testing according to UL standards before submitting the product.
- UL offers pre-test services during product development to evaluate compliance with UL safety standards, accelerating development, avoiding redesigns, and reducing overall costs and time.
UL1004 is the series of safety standards for motor products in the United States, with UL1004-1 serving as the general standard for common motors. Other standards supplement UL1004-1 with specific requirements for different types of motors, including:
- UL1004-1: Rotating Electrical Machines–General Requirements
- UL1004-2: Impedance Protected Motors
- UL1004-3: Thermally Protected Motors
- UL1004-4: Electric Generators
- UL1004-5: Fire Pump Motors
- UL1004-6: Servo and Stepper Motors
- UL1004-7: Electronically Protected Motors
- UL1004-8: Inverter Duty Motors
Key Standards:
1. UL1004-1: General requirements for rotating electrical machines, applicable to motors with a rated voltage of 460V or below, and all AC/DC rotating and linear motors with a rated voltage of 1000V or below.
2. UL1004-2: Standards for impedance-protected motors with a rated voltage of 600V or below, excluding motors with motor protectors and manual controllers, motors with motor protectors whose contacts control relay coils in the motor starter, sealed compressor motors, and impedance-protected motors with automatic starting switches.
3. UL1004-3: Standards for thermally protected motors equipped with internal or external thermal protectors, such as thermal circuit breakers, automatic reset protectors, manual reset protectors, and one-time use protectors.
