On October 22, 2024, the United States (ANSI) and Canada (SCC) released the safety standard for mobile power banks, ANSI/CAN/ul 2056:2024. Compared to the 2020 edition, "Outline of Investigation for Safety of Lithium-ion Power Banks," the new standard, ANSI/CAN/UL 2056 "Standard for Safety Power Banks," has changes in scope, testing requirements, and methods.
Changes in applicability: The standard now applies to mobile power banks of all battery types, instead of just those with lithium-ion batteries. Voltage range has been expanded: the maximum rated input/output voltage has increased from 20Vdc to 60Vdc, and the rated watt-hour value of the power bank must not exceed 100Wh.
New: The standard applies to products with integrated photovoltaic battery cells as power sources, but products within the scope of portable power supply standard ul 2743 are excluded.
★ Electrical Testing: 55℃ output port short circuit test, abnormal charging test, forced discharge test, BMS verification, power input test, and photovoltaic battery cell flammability test.
★ Enclosure testing: Steady-state uniform force test, bending force test, and mold stress relief test.
★ Miscellaneous tests: Label performance test.
1. Added a 55℃ test condition; removed the requirement for a 24-hour short circuit test.
2. For mobile power banks with lithium-ion battery cells, additional conditions are added: the initial discharge current of the built-in battery must be 1.2 times the maximum continuous discharge current of the built-in battery. There is no need to apply a single fault condition to the BMS of the built-in battery. Discharge will continue until the battery cell or battery explodes, vents, or the BMS operates, and the internal cell shell temperature reaches steady-state conditions or returns to ambient temperature.
For mobile power banks with lithium-ion battery cells, the charging voltage limit has been revised from 1.4 times the maximum voltage of a single cell to 1.1 times.
