On September 21, 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a final rule outlining the regulations for button batteries and standalone button batteries in common household products. The official compliance date for all products manufactured or imported into the United States containing button batteries is March 19, 2024.
The final rule comprises two Federal Register notices: one incorporates the 2023 edition of the industry standard UL 4200A into a federal mandatory rule (16 CFR 1263), and the other introduces additional packaging and labeling requirements for standalone button batteries not covered by UL 4200A.
- Consumer Products Containing Button Batteries:
Consumer products that contain or are designed to use one or more button batteries, whether such batteries are intended to be replaced by the consumer, included in the product, or sold separately. (Consumer products containing button batteries should comply with ANSI/UL 4200A)
- Scope: Button Batteries:
- Single-cell batteries with a diameter greater than the height of the battery
- Any other battery, regardless of the technology used to generate a charge, determined by the Commission to pose an ingestion hazard. Zinc-air batteries used in consumer products are excluded in this context.
