On December 4, 2024, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the revised toy safety standard EN 71-3:2019+A2:2024 – Toy Safety – Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements. According to the plan, this standard will become a national standard in EU member states by June 30, 2025, at the latest. Any conflicting national standards will be withdrawn. This revision will replace the current harmonized toy standard EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021.
- The de-waxing step for products containing greases, oils, waxes, or similar materials has been removed, as it was found to affect the reproducibility of test results.
- The migration results of total chromium (Cr) are now allowed to be used to assess compliance with migration limits for trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)).
- The migration results of total tin (Sn) are now allowed to be used to assess compliance with migration limits for organic tin.
- It is emphasized that composite testing is considered a modification to the test method (i.e., composite testing has not been validated in EN 71-3:2019+A2:2024, and it may lead to deviations in results).
- CEN/TS 17973:2023 is referenced as the classification method for slime materials.
- EN 71-13:2021+A2:2024 – Toy Safety – Part 13: Olfactory Board Games, Cosmetic Kit Toys, and Gustative Games
- EN 71-18:2024 – Toy Safety – Part 18: Phenol Content in Aqueous Toy Materials and Polymer Toy Materials
- EN 71-19:2024 – Toy Safety – Part 19: Bisphenol A Migration from Toy Materials
