With the continuous advancement of technology, laser technology is being increasingly applied across various fields. Whether in medical treatment, industrial manufacturing, or consumer electronics, lasers play a significant role. However, the high-energy properties of lasers also pose potential safety risks. To ensure the safe use of laser products, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has developed the EN 60825-1 standard. This article delves into the standard to help industry professionals and users understand and implement laser safety regulations effectively.

Safety Testing Standards for Laser Products: EN 60825-1(图1)

Background and Purpose of EN 60825-1

The full title of the EN 60825-1 standard is “Safety of Laser Products – Part 1: Equipment Classification and Requirements.” Its primary objective is to protect human health by specifying classifications and detailed safety requirements for laser products, thereby preventing harm caused by laser radiation. The standard applies to various types of laser products, including medical devices, industrial processing equipment, scientific instruments, and consumer electronics.

Classification of Laser Products

According to the EN 60825-1 standard, laser products are categorized into seven main classes, each reflecting the level of potential harm lasers may pose to humans:

- Class 1: These lasers are safe for human eyes and skin under normal usage conditions and are considered the safest.

- Class 1M: These lasers can pose risks when viewed with optical instruments like magnifiers or telescopes.

- Class 2: Low-power visible light lasers (400–700 nm) are not hazardous for brief exposures (less than 0.25 seconds), relying on the human blink reflex for protection.

- Class 2M: Similar to Class 2 but can be hazardous when viewed with optical instruments.

- Class 3R: These lasers pose some risk to the eyes but are safe under controlled conditions, with an output power not exceeding 5 mW.

- Class 3B: Hazardous to both eyes and skin; direct or reflected beams can cause injury, with output power between 5 mW and 500 mW.

- Class 4: Highly dangerous to eyes and skin, even diffuse reflections can be harmful, with output power exceeding 500 mW.

EN 60825-1 Requirements

Safety Labels and Markings

To alert users to potential hazards, EN 60825-1 requires all laser products to be affixed with appropriate warning labels. These labels must include the laser product's classification, maximum output power, wavelength range, and a “Laser Radiation” warning symbol. This information helps users take necessary protective measures while operating laser equipment.

Engineering Controls and Safety Requirements

Laser products must incorporate essential engineering controls during design and manufacturing to ensure safety under normal and foreseeable misuse conditions. Common engineering control measures include:

- Protective Enclosures and Shields: To prevent accidental exposure to laser beams, protecting users from direct or reflected beam injuries.

- Safety Interlocks: Automatically shutting off the laser when protective enclosures are opened, preventing unintended operation.

- Warning Signs and Indicators: Alerting users when the laser is active to avoid inadvertent exposure to laser radiation.

User Information and Training

EN 60825-1 emphasizes that manufacturers must provide detailed operation manuals and safety guides for users. These documents should include proper usage instructions, potential hazards, and recommended protective measures. Additionally, personnel operating high-power lasers are advised to undergo safety training to understand how to effectively mitigate laser radiation risks.

Scope of Application

The EN 60825-1 standard applies to a wide range of laser products, including but not limited to laser pointers, laser marking machines, laser cutting machines, and laser rangefinders. Whether manufacturers, suppliers, or end users, all stakeholders must adhere to this standard to ensure the safe use of laser equipment.

Conclusion

The EN 60825-1 standard provides comprehensive guidance for the safe use of laser products. By defining classifications and specific requirements, it minimizes the health and safety risks associated with laser equipment during operation. Understanding and complying with this standard not only helps protect user safety but also fosters the healthy development of laser technology.

For a more detailed understanding of the EN 60825-1 standard, it is recommended to review the full text or consult relevant professionals. Through scientifically standardized safety measures, we can enjoy the benefits of laser technology while effectively mitigating its potential risks.
