RoHS certification is a mandatory standard established by European Union legislation. The full name of RoHS is the "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" directive. This standard has been officially implemented since July 1, 2006, and is primarily used to regulate the material and process standards of electronic and electrical products, making them more conducive to human health and environmental protection.
RoHS certification, also known as the European Environmental Directive, stipulates that all electronic and electrical products exported to Europe must not contain the following ten toxic and hazardous substances: Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), and Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). It also specifies that the cadmium content must not exceed 0.01%.
The latest EU RoHS 2.0 test (2011/65/EU) is the current RoHS standard. On July 21, 2011, the revised RoHS directive (2011/65/EU) replaced the older version (2002/95/EC), expanding from 6 to 10 restricted substances.
In May 2022, the EU introduced a proposal procedure to add Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) to the restricted substance list under the RoHS directive. Relevant enterprises should closely monitor this development and prepare for compliance in advance.
The content of the following substances in the homogeneous materials of products must not exceed the limits listed in the table below:
- **Substance**: **Limit (mg/kg)**: **Max Percentage**
- Lead (Pb): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Mercury (Hg): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Cadmium (Cd): 100 mg/kg, 0.01%
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): 1000 mg/kg, 0.1%
Large household appliances, small household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, consumer equipment, lighting equipment, electrical tools, toys, leisure and sports equipment, medical devices, monitoring and control equipment, automatic dispensers, and other electronic and electrical equipment not covered by the above categories.
RoHS Testing Timeline: The standard testing period is 5 working days.
RoHS Testing Methods: For RoHS in the US, EU, and other global markets, the IEC 62321 series of standards is used for testing. For China RoHS, the GB/T 26125 testing method is applied.
