Button batteries are widely used in daily life, but with the wide range of applications, product safety issues have also attracted more attention .
In September 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to approve UL 4200A-2023 as a mandatory consumer product safety rule for consumer products containing button batteries to reduce the ingestion hazards of button batteries to children 6 years and younger. (Note: As long as the product contains button batteries, it needs to meet the relevant requirements of UL 4200A when exported to the United States. Regardless of whether the button battery is replaceable or not, regardless of whether the button battery can be recharged.)
1. When the terminal product has a "battery that allows the user to move or replace it", the structure needs to meet the following requirements:
① The No. 11 test probe of IEC61032 must not come into contact with the battery. Enclosures that can be opened without the aid of tools, or that can be opened by hand in less than two independent consecutive movements, are opened for evaluation during the inspection.
②The product needs to be designed as follows to prevent children from moving the battery:
Tools (such as screwdrivers, coins) are required to open the battery cavity, and a minimum rotation angle of at least 0.5Nm and 90 degrees is required to open the battery cavity, or the fastener should engage at least two complete threads;
Or when using your hands, at least two independent and simultaneous actions are required to open the lid or door of the battery compartment.
③If the cover or door of the battery compartment is fixed by screws or similar fasteners, the fasteners must be limited to the cover or door, such as non-removable screws.
2. When a product has a "battery that does not allow users to move or replace it", it needs to be effectively prevented from being removed by users or children. The product must be designed to:
①Make the battery inaccessible through the casing or similar means;
② Or completely fix the battery by welding, rivets or similar means.

●Impact test
●Rolling test
●Torque test
●Tensile test
●Compression test
●Installation robustness test (for batteries that are not allowed to be moved or replaced by the user)
To obtain the UL4200A report, you need to go through the following steps and it is expected to take 7-10 working days:
First, learn more about the specific requirements of UL4200A. This includes requirements for the physical design, packaging, warning labels, and educational materials provided for button batteries.
Find a qualified and reliable third-party laboratory to conduct testing (authorized by CPSC (U.S. Consumer Council) CFR 1263).
Submit samples of your products for testing. Confirm the final shipment of the sample to ensure the accuracy of the test results.
The laboratory will conduct a series of tests on the submitted samples according to the UL4200A label. This may include battery safety performance testing, labeling and packaging review, etc.
Once the test is completed, the laboratory will provide a detailed test report. If your product passes all test items, the report will prove that your product meets the requirements of UL4200A.
Prove to customers or platforms such as Amazon that your products meet relevant safety requirements.
All warning words or icons should be prominent, legible, easily identifiable under normal circumstances, and permanently marked. The label permanent test is as follows:
● The test is carried out by rubbing the mark by hand with a cloth soaked in water for 15 s without obvious force, and rubbing the cloth soaked in petroleum ether on different places or different samples for 15 s. Petroleum ether is a reagent grade hexane with a minimum n-hexane content of 85%.
● Markings should remain legible after each test. If the mark is on a detachable label, the label must not be curled and must not be removed by hand.
● Labels must be in the official language of the country where the product is located, or if there is no official language, English must be used.
● A safety sign is an alarm symbol, an exclamation point in a triangle, which when used with a signal word, must precede the signal word. The bottom of the safety alert symbol must be on the same level as the bottom of the signal word's alert symbol. The safe height of the warning sign must be equal to or exceed the height of the signal letter.
● Some text in information boards must be in bold and capital letters, as shown in the warning label example, to draw the reader's attention.
● For labels provided on stickers, tags, instructions, or manuals, the height of the safety warning symbol and signal word "WARNING" must be at least 0.2 inches (5 mm). Unless otherwise specified, the remainder of the text must be in capital letters at least 0.1 inches (2.5 mm).
● For labels that need to be affixed to consumer product packaging or directly affixed to consumer product packaging, the text size should depend on the area of the main display panel. The specific size requirements are shown in the table below:
Packaging label - Warning: Contains coin battery (Icon minimum width: 7mm and height: 9mm)
Packaging label - Warning of ingestion Hazard (Icon must be at least 8mm in diameter)
If the consumer product does not have a packaging box, one of the above warning labels should be attached to the hangtag or label.
When the space on the main display panel of consumer product packaging does not allow for the above two warning labels, the following warning labels can be used at the same time:
Packaging label – main information panel
If the primary or secondary panels of consumer product packaging cannot be affixed, or there is no product packaging, the accompanying tag or label should include the following text:
a) For products with built-in non-replaceable batteries, include a statement that the product contains a non-replaceable battery
b) Battery type (eg, LR44, CR2032)
c) Rated voltage
product label:
If product space is limited, the following icons may be used. Width at least 7mm and height at least 9mm.
If the product is too small to reflect the above label or icon, the product packaging or hang tag label must meet the above requirements.
● The instructions and manuals provided should include all applicable markings of the above sections and the following instructions. If instructions and manuals are not provided, this information should be on the main page or secondary page of the consumer product packaging box. If there is no packaging box, this should be reflected on the accompanying hang tag or label.
a) "Remove and recycle or dispose of used batteries immediately and in accordance with local regulations, away from children. Do not dispose of batteries in household garbage or in an incinerator."
b) "Even used batteries can cause serious injury or death."
c) "Call your local poison control center for treatment information."
d) Indicate compatible battery types (such as LR44, CR2032).
e) Nominal battery voltage.
f) "Non-rechargeable batteries must not be charged."
g) "Do not force discharge, charge, disassemble, heat above (manufacturer's rated temperature), or incinerate. Doing so may result in personal injury and chemical burns due to exhaust, leakage, or explosion."
Products containing replaceable coin cell batteries should also contain the following statement:
a) "Make sure the battery is installed correctly according to polarity (+ and -)."
b) "Do not mix old and new batteries, or batteries of different brands or types, such as alkaline, carbon-zinc or rechargeable batteries."
c) "Remove batteries from equipment that has not been used for an extended period of time and recycle or dispose of batteries immediately in accordance with local regulations."
d) "Always secure the battery compartment fully. If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product, remove the battery, and keep it away from children."
●Products with non-replaceable button batteries should also include a statement indicating that the product contains non-replaceable batteries.
