Overview of DOE Certification

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for the energy efficiency certification in the United States. DOE certification is based on U.S. regULations regarding the energy efficiency of electronic and electrical products. The DOE introduced mandatory energy efficiency standards for certain products, including power adapters, power supplies, and chargers.

- On July 1, 2011, DOE mandated Level IV energy efficiency standards.

- On February 2016, DOE raised the requirement to Level VI energy efficiency standards.

To comply with DOE standards, manufacturers must submit their products for online registration via the DOE’s official website. External power supplies, such as power adapters, switch-mode power supplies, and chargers, are all included in this program, which aims to improve energy efficiency and REDuce power consumption.

Products Covered by DOE Certification

- Battery Chargers: Products with small-capacity batteries such as Bluetooth headsets, Bluetooth speakers, fitness trackers, mobile phones, tablets, in-car DVD players, MP3/MP4 players, etc.

- External Power Supplies: Chargers for everyday devices like mobile phones and tablets. Currently, power adapters must meet DOE’s Level VI energy efficiency standards.

Common DOE Certification Standards

- External Power Supplies (EPS) – 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix Z

- Battery Charging Systems (BCS) – 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix Y

DOE Certification Process

1. Submit product samples for testing (at least two samples required).

2. Laboratory testing.

3. Issuance of test reports if the product passes.

4. Laboratory registers the product (requires U.S. importer or U.S. manufacturer information).

Required Documentation for DOE Certification

1. Product samples

2. Technical documentation

3. Product nameplate

4. Certification application form, etc.
