FCC certification is a mandatory EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) certification in the United States, mainly applicable to electronic and electrical products operating between 9K-3000GHz. It covers various aspects of radio, communication, and especially the radio interference issues with wireless communication devices and systems, including radio interference limits, measurement methods, certification systems, and organizational management. Products regulated by the FCC include personal computers, CD players, copiers, radios, fax machines, video game consoles, electronic toys, TVs, and microwaves. These products are classified into CLASS A (commercial or industrial use) and CLASS B (household use). The FCC sets stricter regulations for CLASS B products with lower limit values than CLASS A products.
Manufacturers or importers ensure their products undergo the necessary tests in laboratories per regulatory standards to meet technical requirements, retaining the test reports. The FCC has the right to request product samples or test data from manufacturers. The product must have a local U.S. responsible party; otherwise, FCCD certification serves as an alternative. The responsible party issues a compliance declaration.
Products must pass testing in an FCC-authorized lab, and after Geting the test report, the product's technical details—photos, schematics, block diagrams, manuals, etc.—are submitted to a TCB (Telecommunication Certification Body) for review. Once the TCB verifies all information, it issues a certificate and authorizes the use of the FCC ID. First-time FCC certification applicants must apply for a Grantee Code (company identifier) from the FCC. Certified products must display the FCC ID.
1. Determine FCC-SDoC or FCC-ID Based on Product Type
- Ordinary products (EMC testing): Products like electronic scales, humidifiers, robotic vacuums, and fans without wireless functionality undergo FCC-SDoC.
- Wireless products (wireless testing): Products such as mobile phones, remote controls, Bluetooth speakers, and tablets require FCC-ID certification.
- Other wireless products: For products that function without wireless capability or have a USB interface for data transfer, FCC-SDoC and FCC-ID certifications are recommended.
2. Cost by Product Type
- Non-wireless products under FCC-SDoC: approximately $1,000, with a processing time of 10-15 business days.
- Wireless products like mobile phones, remote controls, Bluetooth speakers, and tablets under FCC-ID: between $1,800 and $3,000, with a processing time of about four weeks.
