UKCA, which stands for United Kingdom Conformity Assessed, is the new product certification introduced by the UK after Brexit. Electronic and electrical products entering the UK market need to undergo standard testing under UK regulations, obtain a UKCA certification certificate, and bear the UKCA mark, replacing the use of the EU CE mark in the UK market. Electronic and electrical products subject to EU rules must also undergo UKCA certification in the UK.
The UKCA certification process and CE certification are quite similar, with fees charged according to directives. However, the specific cost depends on the product (the following fees are for reference only).
For example, for regular household appliances: classified into high voltage (110-220V) and low voltage (below 75V).
- High voltage products: $1000
- Low voltage products: $800
If your product includes wireless functionality, you need to specify the wireless function, Bluetooth version, etc.
Required documents and samples for UKCA certification application:
1. Required documents: instruction manual, schematic diagram, operational description, block diagram, PCB silkscreen, PCB layout diagram, PCB BOM, and product label.
2. Required samples: 2 finished product samples, 1 conduction legal frequency sample, 1 radiation legal frequency sample.
Similar to the CE mark, the UKCA mark is applied to products by the manufacturer to ensure compliance with statutory standards after following the prescribed self-declaration procedures. Manufacturers can seek testing from accredited third-party laboratories to demonstrate that their products meet the relevant standards and obtain a Declaration of Conformity (AoC). This forms the basis for the manufacturer’s self-declaration (DoC). The DoC must include key information such as the manufacturer's name and address, and product model.
The UKCA certification will replace the current EU CE certification, and most products will fall under the UKCA certification scope. Regarding market access for electrical products, the CE marking scheme will continue to be implemented. Once Brexit is complete, existing UK certification bodies will automatically upgrade to UKCA NB bodies and be listed in the UK's version of the NANDO database (Notified and Designated Organisations). The four-digit NB number will remain unchanged for identifying NB bodies that have already approved or are circulating CE marked products. The UK began accepting applications from other EU NB bodies in early 2019, which must be authorized to become UKCA NB bodies and issue NB certificates.
