According to the GCC product certification list, adult clothing exported to the United States requires a gcc certificate and must meet the testing requirements of 16 CFR Part 1610: Flammability Standards for Textile Clothing. So, what are the testing requirements of 16 CFR Part 1610? Let's take a closer look:
This regulation applies to apparel and textile products used in clothing, aiming to reduce injuries and loss of life caused by the flammability of clothing textiles.
It does not apply to:
- Hats: Hats that, when worn alone, do not cover the face, neck, or shoulders.
- Gloves: Gloves that are no longer than 14 inches in length and are not part of an ensemble.
- Footwear: Footwear that is not partially or entirely made of hosiery and is not part of an ensemble.

Grade Non-pile Fabrics Pile Fabrics Notes
Class 1
● Average burn time ≥ 3.5 seconds
● Sample does not ignite
● Average burn time > 7 seconds
● Surface burn time 0-7 seconds, but no ignition or melting of the base fabric, only surface flash flame Generally flammable, can be used in clothing.
Class 2
Average burn time 4-7 seconds, with ignition and melting of the base fabric. Moderately flammable, only suitable for pile textile fabrics.
Class 3 Average burn time < 3.5 seconds Average burn time < 4 seconds, with ignition and melting of the base fabric. Rapid and intense burning, not suitable for clothing.
Manufacturers of clothing for export to the U.S. should ensure their products pass the 16 CFR Part 1610 flammability test for textile products, to reduce the risk of fire caused by clothing, and also to minimize the risk of recall losses due to non-compliance.
China JJR Laboratory offers safety testing services for textile and footwear products exported to Europe and the U.S., including EU REACH/POPs, U.S. CPSIA, California Proposition 65, flammability, sharp points, small parts, and cords. We help textile export enterprises solve their problems, improve product compliance in the European and U.S. markets, and reduce risks of market recalls and penalties.
