When you go to any store that sells electronic products, you will see many or all stores bearing the familiar Federal Communications Commission (fcc) logo. However, it may not be obvious why they carry it, especially when the device may be as harmless as a motor or phone. It seems that all electronic products carry logos for good reasons; this means fcc certification and compliance with FCC mandatory regulations.

However, this does not fully answer this question because it ignores the role of FCC regulations and why they are so important.

What does FCC certification mean?

FCC certification is designed to ensure that electronic or mechanical equipment only generates safe levels of radio frequency radiation. If a product has passed the FCC certification, it means that it has passed a test process designed to measure the level of RF output. This is an extremely important indicator for any device to pass, because radio frequency can cause dangerous electromagnetic interference (EMI).

What is radio frequency radiation and electromagnetic interference?

Radio frequency radiation is the unintentional radio wave output produced by all electronic devices to varying degrees. Uncontrolled RF levels may start to increase the risk of EMI, which will damage other devices and interfere with their normal operation. This can range from static in communication equipment to dangerous anomalies in flight control, life support, and other complex electronic systems.

How do you obtain FCC certification?

The process of obtaining FCC certification is rigorous and straightforward. When testing products and equipment, the FCC outsources to a certified third-party laboratory in China . If you want to be certified for your invention, the first step is to find a laboratory that suits your testing needs.

After you find a suitable laboratory, you need to schedule compliance testing. Experts will largely manage this process themselves, using a variety of advanced instruments to identify the RF output of your equipment and measure it in accordance with regulations. If you pass the test, it means that the radio frequency radiation remains within a safe level. On the other hand, malfunctioning equipment will need to be reworked to reduce its output and comply with regulations.

What is not covered by FCC certification?

FCC certification is a narrow process involving only one thing; the potential EMI risk. If you see that the product has passed FCC regulations, it means that the device generates a safe level of radio frequency radiation. Although you should ensure that any electronic product you buy is fcc certified, from the perspective of consumer protection, the logo is not a seal of quality or approval and should not be considered as such.
