The EN 62841 series of standards is the latest product safety standard issued by the European Union. This standard is used for the safety evaluation and assessment of handheld power tools, tabletop tools, and electric garden tools. In 2015, the EU released the new power tool safety standard EN 62841-1:2015, "Safety of Handheld, Transportable, and Garden Power Tools – Part 1: General Requirements," which has been mandatory since 2018.
EN 62841 integrates the safety requirements for transportable power tools and garden power tools based on the safety requirements for handheld power tools. This integration forms a single standard, with specific safety requirements for different types of handheld, transportable power tools, and garden tools outlined separately in Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. Compared to the previous standards (EN 60745, EN 61029, and EN 60335), the new standard introduces significant technical changes.
The new standard removes the requirement for tracking resistance and adds technical requirements such as critical safety function assessment, noise and vibration measurement, soft material (elastomer) specifications, lithium-ion battery system regulations, the implementation of ISO 13849-1 for power tools, and impact voltage test methods.
1) Handheld power tools: Drills, hammers, angle grinders, polishers, circular saws, spray guns, chainsaws, reciprocating saws, planers, screwdrivers.
2) Transportable power tools: Table saws, miter saws, grinders, band saws, planers, cut-off machines, and compound miter saws.
3) Garden tools: Garden blowers, lawn mowers, grass trimmers, hedge trimmers.
4) Gasoline-powered tools: Gasoline-powered garden tools.
1. General requirements: Basic safety principles for the design, manufacture, installation, and maintenance of equipment.
2. Electrical requirements: Insulation, grounding, leakage protection, overcurrent protection, and other aspects.
3. Voltage and power limits: Applicable to single-phase AC or DC tools with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V and three-phase AC tools with a rated voltage not exceeding 480V. The rated input power should not exceed 3700W.
4. Battery tool applicability limitations: Given in sections K.1 and L.1.
5. Electronic safety-critical functions: Added in Clause 18.
6. Soft material (elastomer) specifications: Added in Clauses 9, 19, and 13.
7. Test fingers and probes: The test fingers and probes from EN 60745-1 are replaced with references to the basic IEC standard.
8. Specific tool and machinery requirements: Covers handheld, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery safety requirements.
9. Excluded tools: Does not apply to tools intended for use in explosive atmospheres, food preparation and processing tools, medical tools, tools used with cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, heating tools, etc.
