The European Union’s new EMC standard, EN 55032, was officially enforced on March 5, 2017, replacing EN 55013 (AV equipment EMC standard) and EN 55022 (traditional IT equipment EMC standard). Due to technological convergence and the growing trend of cross-industry integration, many devices can no longer be clearly categorized as either AV products or IT equipment. The new standard, which covers information technology equipment (ITE), audio and video (AV) equipment, broadcast receivers, entertainment lighting control equipment, or combinations of these devices, ensures consistency in emission testing and evaluation for such products.
From now on, if you are selling multifunctional IT or multimedia products in Europe, you no longer need to use EN 55022/24 and EN 55013/20. The new unified emission and immunity standard, EN 55032, has been added to the Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union, and the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC has incorporated this new standard.
Modern multimedia equipment, from both technical configuration and usage perspectives, is increasingly integrated, making it difficult to classify products as purely IT or AV equipment. Previously, EN 55013 and EN 55022 were used together for testing such products. EN 55032 was introduced to address this challenge and streamline compliance requirements.
EN 55032 applies to multimedia equipment with an AC or DC rated voltage not exceeding 600V. Multimedia equipment includes:
- Information technology equipment (ITE)
- Audio and video equipment
- Broadcast receivers
- Entertainment lighting control equipment
- Any combination of the above devices
Products previously covered under EN 55013 and EN 55022 are now included within EN 55032. It also applies to professional multimedia equipment.
1. Elimination of interference power and radiated power testing from EN 55013.
2. For wide-voltage products, testing is typically conducted at two voltage levels: 230V (±10V) and 110V (±10V) with frequencies of 50Hz or 60Hz.
3. For monitors and personal computers, a color bar signal with moving elements must be played.
4. For broadcast receiver tuner ports, asymmetric mode conducted emissions must be tested.
EN 55032 replaces:
- EN 55022 (IT equipment)
- EN 55013 (broadcast receivers and related equipment)
- EN 55103 (audio recording equipment)
EN 55032 was approved in December 2012 and includes CISPR 32 + A1 + A2. It has now been officially added to the Official Journal (OJ), allowing manufacturers to use it. However, the old standards were valid during a transition period until March 2017.
Key change: Interference power measurements are no longer permitted, but all other limits and measurement procedures remain largely unchanged.
EN 55035 will replace:
- EN 55024 (IT equipment)
- EN 55020 (broadcast receivers)
- EN 55103 (audio recording equipment)
EN 55035 has not yet been added to the OJ and cannot currently be used by manufacturers, but it is expected to come into effect soon. The transition period for the old standards lasts until 2017.
Expected change: Multiple measurements for multifunctional devices may no longer be necessary in EN 55035.
