Amazon's Strict Regulations on Portable Fire Pits

Recently, many sellers of portable fire pits have reported that their products have been removed from Amazon or that they have received warning emails. Amazon requires sellers to upload relevant safety test reports before listing such products.

Amazon Requirements

Requirements

If you list products on the Amazon marketplace, you must comply with all applicable federal, provincial, territorial, and local laws, as well as Amazon policies (including this policy).

Portable Fire Pits Covered Under This Policy

This policy applies to portable decorative light sources that generate suspended flames using alcohol-based fuel in an open-cup reservoir. These products typically consist of a bowl or base, usually made of ceramic or other heat-resistant materials. They may also be referred to as portable fire bowls, portable fireplaces, fire pits, fire bowls, patio fire pits, flame bowls, flame lamps, or tabletop fire pits.

Amazon's Policy on Portable Fire Pits

According to Amazon's policy, all portable fire pits must be tested and comply with the standards of ASTM F3363-19 (Standard Specification for Unvented Liquid/Gel Fuel-Burning Portable Devices).

> Note: The test report must include images of the tested product, and these images must clearly demonstrate that the tested product matches the one listed on the product detail page.

Required Information

Amazon may request the following information at any time. It is recommended that sellers prepare these documents in advance for submission:

- Your company name (if applicable) and seller ID

- Your contact information: email address and phone number

- A list of all portable fire pits you have listed

- Images of the listed portable fire pits and their packaging (if applicable). These images must show all sides of the product and packaging for review

- Product images or test reports proving compliance with warning label requirements (ASTM F3363-19, Section 6.1)

- Product images or test reports proving compliance with instruction manual requirements (ASTM F3363-19, Section 6.1.9)

- A test report issued by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, confirming that each product has been tested and complies with the applicable requirements

How to Submit Information?

If you receive a request from Amazon to provide compliance documentation, follow these steps to submit the required information:

1. In Seller Central, select the Performance tab, then click Account Health

2. Under Manage Your Compliance in the lower right corner, click Product Compliance Requests

3. To add compliance information or file an appeal for a single product, click Add/Appeal Compliance. To submit for multiple products, select the products and click Perform Action on Selected Products at the top of the requirements table to choose how to submit documents and information

4. In the Provide Documents section, upload the required compliance documents and information. If filing an appeal, submit the appeal details and supporting documents in the Appeal Request section

5. Click Submit for Approval to send your submission for Amazon's review

Policy Violations

If you fail to provide the required information before the applicable deadline, Amazon may take the following actions:

- Remove the relevant product listings

- Suspend your ability to add new products and/or product information

- Withhold any pending payments

ASTM F3363-19 Portable Fire Pit Safety Standards

Scope of the Standard

1.1 These requirements apply to devices that meet the following conditions:

- 1.1.1 Burn fuel on an open liquid reservoir surface and sustain a flame

- 1.1.2 Do not require additional external ventilation to release combustion exhaust

- 1.1.3 Burn liquid fuel, gel fuel (such as solid alcohol), or other non-solid fuels in an open reservoir or a single-use, non-refillable fuel container

- 1.1.4 Have a fuel capacity of no more than 2.5 liters (0.67 gallons)

- 1.1.5 Have an output power of 1.47 kW (5,000 BTU/h) or less

- 1.1.6 Are portable and can be manually moved

- 1.1.7 Are intended for indoor, outdoor, or both environments

1.2 These requirements do not apply to the following devices:

- 1.2.1 Candles

- 1.2.2 Devices used for cooking or heating food

- 1.2.3 Devices that burn solid fuels as determined by test method D4359

- 1.2.4 Devices without an open reservoir, such as refillable oil lamps or outdoor garden torches/table lamps that use a wick (see Appendix X1)

1.3 This specification sets minimum safety requirements for these devices to ensure a reasonable level of safety during normal use. The goal is to enhance personal safety and reduce the risk of fire, injury, or fatalities.

1.4 This specification is not intended to replace other safety measures, such as adult supervision, close monitoring during product use, or fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems.

1.5 Values stated in SI units are considered standard. Values in parentheses are for explanatory or approximate information.

1.6 This specification provides a method to measure and describe a product's response to heat, flame, and mechanical forces under controlled conditions. However, it does not provide all the factors necessary for evaluating fire hazards or risks in real-world fire conditions.

1.7 This standard does not address all safety issues associated with its use (if any). It is the responsibility of users to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices before use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.

1.8 This international standard has been developed in accordance with internationally recognized standardization principles, as outlined in the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee's Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines, and Recommendations.
