The astm d4169 standard, titled "Standard Practice for Performance Testing of Shipping Containers and Systems", is an important standard published by ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials). It is used to evaluate the ability of shipping containers and systems to withstand predetermined hazards during the distribution cycle. The ASTM D4169 standard is continually revised, with the primary goal of enhancing its usability and effectiveness in assessing containers and systems. These revisions officially reflect the industry's evolving needs and the latest insights regarding risks associated with the transportation and handling of goods. The latest revision of the ASTM D4169 standard occurred on February 12, 2024. Below are the changes from ASTM D4169-22 to ASTM D4169-23:
1. Reference F2825 Added: The reference F2825 has been included in the standard.
2. New Term 3.2.7: A new term has been introduced for “Small and lightweight packages” under DC2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17. These packages must weigh less than 10.00 lb (4.53 kg) and have a volume less than 2.000 ft³ (0.056 m³).
3. Correction in DC13: The weight in DC13, Table 1, has been corrected from 61.8 kg to 68.1 kg.
4. New Section 6.1.3: A new section has been added indicating that environmental conditioning for F2825 may be applicable when performing DC13.
5. Changes to Section 11.2: Item 4 has been removed from the table for selecting F values. A new guideline has been added: "If testing a unit load with a pallet, reduce the F value by 30%."
6. Revision of Freight Density (11.4.1): The freight density Mf has been updated from 10 lb/ft³ (160 kg/m³) to 12 lb/ft³ (192.2 kg/m³).
7. New Section 11.4.2: A flowchart for selecting stacking height has been included.
