The standard specifies general requirements for two-pole and two-pole with earth appliance couplers, as well as general requirements for household and similar electrical equipment connected to the main power supply. This document also applies to appliance inlets or appliance outlets that are installed on or integrated into appliances.
IEC 60320-1 applies to appliance couplers with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and a rated current not exceeding 16 A, including:
- Appliance inlets for household appliances (such as electric kettles, ovens, washing machines, etc.);
- Appliance couplers for industrial and commercial electrical appliances;
- Power interfaces in medical equipment;
- Appliance inlets that are integrated into or used independently from devices;
- Other electrical equipment that connects to power supply cords.
Typical products covered: connectors, plug connectors, appliance inlets, appliance outlets, power cord assemblies, and interconnecting wire assemblies.
The IEC 60320 standard includes the following parts:
• IEC 60320-1: General requirements for appliance couplers for household and similar purposes.
• IEC 60320-2-2: Interconnection couplers for household and similar equipment.
• IEC 60320-2-4: Appliance couplers engaged by appliance weight.
The fourth edition of IEC 60320-1:2021 replaces the third edition IEC 60320-1:2015 and its amendment IEC 60320-1:2015/AMD1:2018.
